TWO CYLINDER OPPOSED
AIR COOLED ENGINE believed to be a
1918 SHEFFIELD 40 for use in a SHEFFIELD MOTORCAR SPEEDER
From what I have been able to detirmine, this is a 1918 Sheffield 40 made for use in a Sheffield Motorcar Speeder (you know the small railroad utility cars). Sheffield was bought by Fairbanks-Morse sometime around 1900 but they continued to build and sell the engines under the Sheffield name. They may also have been sold for stationary applications.
As you can see from the pictures, it is four cycle, air cooled, two cylinder opposed, iron base and cylinders. It has a brass tag that just says "Engine No." and then has the number stamped in. The stamped number begins with a "Y" or a "V". It has some casting numbers that all begin with the letter "A". It has a Wico magneto which is not original, it is a 4 cylinder mag. It has a 1" brass Schebler Carburetor which looks original. It is missing the flywheel. "Free" and otherwise in very good condition.
It is for
sale. Located in Rhode Island. Call me or email
me with any questions... or if you can supply additional information on
the engine.

Here is a link to a page that shows a restored Sheffield Motorcar with one of these engines (but not this one).
