* Ernie' Wish I had a photo of that one, have never seen an engine or photo of any kind of any of several engines that carried the name ?? John I have never assembled the info on this Co.but I will share my notes. some of the time lines cross over and may be off a yr or so but this is a fascinating subject of the earliest Old Gas Marine Engine history ! Levi Julian Wing established Co. 1875 in Jersey city,N.J. mfgring his design of disc air fans. A prolific inventor of many different things over the yrs I believe his earliest engine attempt was a rotary marine steam launch eng that was not successful, he had teamed up with Thomas A. Watson and Frank 0. Wellington and formed the "Fore River Engine Company" in 1894 in Braintree Massachucetts, for the next decade they did mfgr gasoline marine engs and then began production of many types of marine vessels until 1986 ! As an aside, Thomas A. Watson is the very same as in (Alexander Graham Bell's notebook entry of 10 March 1876 describes his successful experiment with the telephone. Speaking through the instrument to his assistant, Thomas A. Watson, in the next room, Bell utters these famous first words, "Mr. Watson -- come here -- I want to see you."} I believe that these early light gas engines were partially designed to power his disc fans as well as marine applications ? 1895 L.J.Wing Co. mfgrd Stewart Automatic clutches, Wing Work Wagons,Wing gas motors for wagons and launches. Levi J.Wing Patent # 607,580 applied 1896,issued 1898 - these are a few illustrations of that patent. The Sportsmen Exposition of 1897 Madison Square Garden The New York Yacht, Launch and Engine Company, showed a twenty-one-foot, mahogany-finished launch with a two-horse-power Wing gas engine, a sixteen-foot yacht tender and several gas engines. The gas for the Wing engine is made as used, and ignited by an electric spark, thereby avoiding any danger of explosion. The specialty of this company is very light-weight engines and their Foster reversible screw which will stop a boat under full headway in about one length. This company builds all sizes and many grades of launches. The company carried on for many yrs mfging heating, and ventilating systems for industry and marine applications ! Wonder where all the engines went ?? * |

* I have looked at the photos above and don't seem to see the Water/pump, on the illustration above I guess you would have to build a separate mount in the hull under the front of the flywheel to mount it ? Very different for sure ! * |
