My father and i are puting together a 16foot clinker open launch, it will be powered by a stuart turner p55, my question is about trailers, would anyone be able to give me a approximate weight of the boat plus motor and be able to suggest the best type of trailer to transport the boat. The boat will be taken to many putt putt regattas and win many trophys we hope, so a sturdy reliable trailer is needed. thanks for any help anyone can give Matt and Ron |

Matt, I own a 15' clinker putt putt with P55 fitted. Boat with motor weighs about 700kgs. I had a trailer purpose built by Easytow trailers in Heathcote Central victoria. Main theme needs to be plenty of keel rollers not just 3 or 4 provided by likes of commercial brands for plastic boats. I dont use wobble rolers as I find they get caught on the planks. Boat sits entirely on keel rollers (about 8 I think) with timber side supports just to control movement. I also have teflon guides next to each of the rear 4 rollers which make it easy for the keel to locate itself. I can drive my boat onto the trailer easily. You will need a braked trailer. If you get one made or have the choice, get a trailer with a "V" at the rear so that the stern of the boat sits down. Putt putts are quite deep at the stern and with a flat trailer it makes it harder to launch and retrieve. I have photo of my boat on the trailer so will email to you directly. I have towed my boat from Melbourne to davistown, Toronto, Goolwa and Hobart, and boat shows no distress from towing. I can provide contact details for easytow if you need it but surely there will be a custom builder in Sydney you could use. David. |

Matt Great advice from David. I also have just trailered my 16 Ft putt putt. I was lucky enough to find a trailer with heeps of keel rollers and have also used side supports. The only thing i would add is to get tyres with the smallest diameter as it makes it easier to launch. closer to the water and all that. Next Time I have it in the water i will take a pic just of the trailer so you can see. Hopefuly this weekend if the weahter is OK. |

Many thanks to David and Rosey for their help and advice, the hull is nearly planked, my father and i will be fitting her out with a mixture of Rosewood and Huon pine, and we are currently arguing over teak or beech for the laid decks. The motor, a p55 is also nearing completion, and we are looking forward to when all the hard work is over and we can get out on the water with other enthusiasts, again many thanks. Matt |
