I was out several days ago and the engine seemed to be running a bit hot. After about 5-10 minutes there was a dark brown ooze coming out around one of the head bolts on the rear cylinder - not a good sign. I came back to my dock and let it all cool down. I carefully removed the head and gasket but there was no sign of a leak. I then checked the torque on the bolts on the front cylinder - it was about 20 ft-lb on each bolt - really not good even for a low compression engine like the ST Lawrence. Re-torqued both cylinder head bolts to about 50 ft-lb. I also re-packed the gland seal around the water pump - there was almost nothing left of the previous packing - the pump was barely pumping - that's why it was running hot. Took it out today and it ran as right as rain - a nice cruise on an early autumn afternoon. Lessons have been learned . . .. Miro |

As memory serves I torqued the nuts on the head of my 3 hp St.Lawrence to 50 ft/lbs as well. Glad all is well now. Cheers! |
