Good Day All.
Mainly for the Aussie folks but also for general interest. I was very kindly given a pair of these plaques as fitted to the few Vinco boats made. Does anyone have info on dates or have any images of them fitted to hulls? I have not identified the metal used to cast them as yet, They are not plated, but made from a very pale, Monel like metal.
Also, would anyone have a spare cap for a Lucas twin cyl magneto Model SR? This is for a friend.

Hi John,
Most interesting. Do you know whereabouts on the boat they were placed?
From the brochures I have Vinco sold open launches 14, 16, 18 and 20 feet. They also sold a cabin boat of 18 feet. The smaller boats were clinker with the larger boats being available in both clinker and carvel.
None of the pictures show these plates.
Is it possible they were originally plated?
The reason I ask this is the carb and grease cups on my 2 3/4 HP engine were originaly nickel plated.

Hello Mark.
Yes, these are interesting. No, they were not plated, I had a judicious file of the back and it is a uniform colour throughout,made of a cast, fairly ductile metal, two 3/16 BSW brass mounting bolts in each. These were broken off and quite zinc depleted, implying a long time exposed to salt water. I suspect the plaques are a Cupro - Nickel alloy? Only a very light film of green corrosion on them front and back. Chap who gave them to me said he found them in '94 on a clinker launch that had been out of the water for 'many years' and was destroyed by termites. He was trying to restore the launch but it was too far gone. His impression was that Vinco only made a dozen or so boats, how does this fit in with your research? The plaques were fitted on the bows, 12 - 18 inches back from the stem and on the second plank down. As can be seen they are a handed pair. It would have been nice to have a photo of the original launch, though. I do not think there would be many Vinco launches around now. A clue to the age is the extended top bar of the 'V'. I could not see that logo on any of the pamphlets you sent me, have you seen that particular format anywhere?
The plot thickens!

None of my pamphlets show Vinco like that. Quite a few have a Vinco logo that has a large "V" with the "inco" following the line and a boat underneath.
I have emailed you a zip file with what I know and samples of the various brochures I have.
I don't know how many boats they built but my impression has always been quite a few.

I had a thought over the weekend. If we happen to find no photographic record of these on the Vinco made hulls, they may possibly have come from the later Vinco water scooters,floor polishers or sanders. So we will need to dig up some info on these.
Anyway, they were fitted to a very old hull, they are a part of Vinco manufacturing history and they look good, so I intend to fit them to my boat! |

Hi John,
Over the weekend I had a bit of a ring around and have been told that there is at least one possibly two Vinco boats on Lake Macquarie with these plates.
Next time I'm up that way I will take some photos.
Put them on the boat John they'll look great. |
