Received the following from Russell Ward:
Quote:Hi, Andrew, I have attached a pic of an excellent fate for a Simplex marine engine and a pic of the engine itself. The boat is 18 ft and dates (according to the owner) to the late 1800s. The event was the Lake Rotoiti Wooden Boat Parade. This boat (Pandora) was awarded best in parade. Simplex engines were Australian on origin as far as I am aware. They were very neat and everything was enclosed. This one starts on the flywheel. Regards Russell.

Simplex cylinders are still being produced by a firm at Seven Hills in Sydney, Australia. I'll get the name and post it - not sure about the full range of parts, but John Forest in Sydney still has some eg rings, valve springs, con rods & pumps. Anyone can email me for his telephone number. |

Tim it's Hardmann & Hall of Seven Hills. They'll sell you a new cylinder, head exhaust, etc kit for @$2500.00AUD for the single. A new motor(I think reco bottom end) incl FNR gearbox is around 5K AUD. You can still get the castings and possibly a complete twin 10Hp engine. Hardmann and Hall and Old's in QLD are the only companies that I'm aware of, in Australia, still manufacturing the early syle inboards. I know Blaxland parts are still available but not complete new engines. Does anybody know of any other companies still manufacturing? Regards Mark S. |

Steve, she was direct drive off the gearbox and I dunno what that was. Utilities box or bilge pump or battery, who knows? I'll ask the owner when I see him next. Russell |

I am looking for information on piston size and bore stroke of a Simplex one lunger, approximately 1940. No marks could be found on the engine. Any identifying features that may be found on the engine would be helpful. Thanks, Reg |

Reg, If it is a four stoke there are a couple of types. The 5/6 Hp and the later 7Hp(as above). The 5/6 is 4" stroke by 3 3/4" bore with the 7 having the same stroke and a 3 7/8" bore. Regards Mark S. |

Hi Marks, I have recently purchased an old putter with a Simplex motor identical to the one pictured in Pandora. Stamped on the block is the rating of 5Hp. You mention that the above pictured motor is 7 Hp. I was wondering if you know if Simplex made a 5 Hp in the same shape as the above motor. Regards Daniel |

If it's metal I can't help you in the repair. However, is it set up so that you could make a new float using cork? I've done that and it works well. You would have to epoxy the metal connection to/into the cork. Also it is important that you seal the connector and the cork with gasoline tank sealer. This will prevent the cork from absorbing gas, "sinking" and the carb flooding over time. Good luck, Ted |

Hi Graeme, If your Simplex is a twin cylinder it will be the 10/12. It should be fitted with an Alpha 'A' series carby. I'm not sure what can go wrong with the carby that cannot be readily fixed ? what's the problem?) but I have an early 10/12 and I'm interested in suggestions for alternatives too. |

Greg, I'm a Simplex twin owner but have not heard of a 4 cylnder version. I wonder if it's a marine conversion of an A Model ford engne (or some other side valve car engine) or whether Hardman and hall actually produced there own 4 cylinder at some time. Cheers Laurie |

The Simplex 4 cylinder is a side valve too. I believe it was a conversion of the Ford Prefect? [before my maritime time] I think it was of far less cubic capacity than the 10 - 12 Hp Twin, eg only 1000 _ 1200cc? What was the 4cy BABY Simplex mentioned above by Jack Jenson? |

The old sidevalve Ford 10 motors (from early Prefects and Anglias) were popular for use in small boats. I'm too young to know of a Simplex marine conversion but I'm sure someone can let us know? |

Hi ljh, You could try Simplex Marine Engines at 3 Stanton Rd Seven Hills NSW 2147 (ph 02 9624 6704) You will need to confirm the bore of your motor (3 3/4" for the earlier motors or 3 7/8' for the current ones) or Leon Pompei at Pompei's Marine Mordialloc Vic ph 0419571788. Regards Laurie I bou |
