I just acquired a Caille single cylinder, 2 cycle inboard engine with an Acorn carburetor. It needs a lot of help! Where can I find a manual (reprint) or any other pertinant information about Caille inboards? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe these engine are very simular the the liberty single. I have one of these restored and a couple more that I havent gotten to yet. Im not sure if I can help you but if you have a specfic
question I will try

Since many of these engines are fundamentally the same, and many of the challenges that you are facing , have been experienced by the herewith assembled multitude, I suggest that you start with the basics. Is the engine free to turn? How bad is the insde of the crankcase(i.e. did water get inside)? Do yo all of the outside pas such as the car, the ignition timer, the water pump and how bad ( or good) are they? How far have you taken the dis-assembly and have you managed to get things loosened with buggering them? If you've got he engine apart, is the cylinder scored? The piston and rings are probably filled with carbon but can you see obvious damage? Are the journals of te main bearings ad the con rod bearing scored and if so, how deep do the scores run?
You see there are many items to follow up ad I guaratee that you'll enjoy eachof the challenges and side-effects ( e.g. scraped knuckles etc) .

Caille serial #
I wonder if anyone has a list of serial numbers which might tell years of these engines. I found a number on the flywheel; 2789C. Could this be a serial # or just a casting #?

I have recently acquired a Caille two stroke inboard 2HP(Piston is 2.625" diameter)?- the crankcase has mounting flanges for engine bearers. It looks very similar to the Liberty engine, but has a polished brass exhaust mounted at 90 degrees to the cylinder. It also has a waterpump mounted on the cylinder driven by the crankshaft. This is under the cylinder mounting bracket for the Caille embossed fuel tank. Number stamped on the exhaust is 34057, and on a brass plug in the cylinder is stamped 'Pat No 4-8-13'. Any ideas when the engine was made, and has anyone any illustrations from brochures etc. Carburetor is a 0.5"Lunkenheimer-what fitted into the 0.75" hole on the side with the fine thread- an air intake filter? Needs a new piston ring, but despite this has plenty of compression, and has all the fittings. |

Sounds like a Caille Bantam Canoe Engine, same as a Liberty but has the water pump and straight out exhaust. I don't think they ever used an air intake filter. Se this link.

It is a Caille Bantam Canoe engine. My oval fuel tank has Caille embossed on each end.
Here is a few photo of the exhaust with serial number(34057) - does this date it? The engine is in pieces at the moment.
Someone has put on a modern bell mouth addition on the Lunkenheimer carb I will be taking it off.
Does anyone have a spare piston ring I could buy, as, as I said before it needs a new one(the original is snapped across the pin location hole, and the part missing), but despite this has plenty of compression.
