Hows it goin guys, great site youve got here, been a big help already. I just bought a 24.5' dory with a 4 atlantic in it. I've restored the outside and am building a boathouse on the shore to store the boat in the winter and restore the inside. The engine is only 15 years old but I want to tinker with it this winter, relace some minor parts and stuff. How do I go about setting it up so it's okay to run it while it's out of water, if at all? |

If it's direct coupled to the shaft, you'll have to lubricate the cutlass bearing, if it's babbit, oil will do. If rubber, use soap and water. Inlet and outlet from water pump can be hooked to a bucket of antifreeze and water, make sure it's circulating. |

Don't let the water jacket dry out or the engine will crack from salt water. Fill the water jacket cast iron parts with straight anit- freeze to keep the oxygen in the air away from the salt in the iron. It isn't freezing that is the problem its salt in the pores of the cast iron. You have been warned so don't start weeping if you suddenly find cracks in the water jacketed parts. The old timers used old motor oil but its messy and you can drain off the anti freeze in the spring and save it for next year. No kerosene will stop the cracking. |

I'm about to store the engine for the winter (it's out of the boat) and am wondering how exactly you fill it with antifreeze. I'm guessing you just drop the water intake hose into the antifreeze and turn the engine over until the antifreeze starts coming out the top? |
