I am quite new to the make and break world and I will have more questions to come I'm sure but one thing puzzles me. From what I understand, there is no charging system on this engine but it requires a coil and battery to create the spark for ignition. My thought is, how long did or does the battery last like this? Did all of the fishermen in Newfoundland and everywhere else these engines were used have battery chargers? Seems impossible as a lot of the outports might not have even had electricity at the time, let alone the means to charge the battery ( I'm also assuming it's 12 volt). Can anyone tell me more about this? |

Most usede 4 dry cells for 6 volts, batteries were an expensive necessity. Magnetos were an option but they were expensive also, but you could finish paying for them. I don't know how long batteries lasted but they usually carried extras, amp meters were available to test batteries, usually one cell went out at a time. |

I remember the battery box, in father's dory carried six No. 6 batteries of 1.5 volt each. Only 4 were hooked up to the coil and engine. The other 2 were spare. Heard some got home with "D" cell batteries after the batteries they were using died. |
