I wish to thank you for the very informative email. Doing exactly what you advised. Putting timber under her, priming, and using my foot on the handle it fired on the first kick after the wheeze cycle you mentioned. I did not let her run as I didn't have any water hooked up but at least all the apprehension is behind me.

Glad it worked out for you. Now start her the way the old time watermen did it with a prime, position the piston just past TDC for the down stroke in the direction you want to run. Then "SNAP THE GARTER" and it should start and run. Myself I don't like the pull out handles permanently sticking out even it if it is only an inch or so.
