Hi All, I have a large (24'overall) stop seine dory that has served me well for many years. I don't want to part with it and am toying with the idea of making a power dory out of it for our camp in Maine. I'm thinking an Atlantic or maybe an Acadia of around 5hp may be suitable. If anyone has any suggestions it would be most appreciated. Also, I have seen a neat device for a retractable prop shaft made by the Dispro Co. of Canada at the classic boat museum in Wolfborough NH. If anyone has any thoughts on these I would be most interested. Thanks, Tim Sullivan Gloucester, Ma. |

Hi Tim, the DisPro device to pull up the prop was specifically designed for a fairly small engine - 3 HP or so at 900 RPM. The prop shaft is 3/4 in diameter with a small Gray and Prior flex joint, so there is a limit to how much torque you can apply. This effectively limits the HP that you'd be able to have. The Acadia's are higher HP at lower RPM so the torque might just overwhelm the shaft. When the boat is in motion, the support bearing for the propo shaft is about 8 in away from the prop so with higher HP the shaft might turn into a flail and do some damage to your hull - which would not be good. Interestingly, Gray and Prior are still in business in New Jersey - they started supplying these flex joints DisPro's in 1916 and it is a wonderful old shop to visit. There is however, a pull up prop and shaft arrangement that I've seen in a dory - saw it in Louisiana - it was John S's boat. John , if you are around, can you take a couple of pictures to show this arrangement? miro |
