A fellow sent these photos asking me to help him identify this marine engine (case of the blind leading the blind). He would like to restore the engine but, obviously, it needs a lot of parts. The images posted here are photos of his photos which accounts for the poor quality. A four spoke flywheel is uncommon so that should help narrow identification down to a few makes. The cylinder and the various openings into the cylinder resemble a Kennebec model made in Bath, Maine, and sold as the Fisherman. However, the Kennebec catalog illustrates five spoke flywheels. More importantly, the cylinder head on the Fisherman is very, very, different than the head on this engine. In fact, the only thing in common between the two heads is that they are both detachable. Any guesses, leads, opinions, etc. would be appreciated.

How about Essex? Not sure if they had four spoked flywheels. |

Doug, I will look up Essex advertisements in some old issues of the Rudder. Andrew, the engine was located in southern Maine. Thanks to both. Hugh |
