I need help in identifying an engine

I am trying to help my friend get an identification on an old engine he has. here is all the info he gave me. marine engine, single cyl. , 4 stroke exposed intake & exhaust, rocker arms are exposed 3" bore x 4" stroke estimated vintage is teens to 30's nameplate says U.S. MARINE Any help or info you may have is greatly appreciated.
