thanks again for posting my photos Bill. Ernie did carlyle manufacture the engine in house or farm it out to some other maker? there is a photo of a similar engine archived here in the mystic show pictures 2004 thirteenth photo down from the top. the fellow i purchased the engine from bought it from the original owner in Wareham, Mass. who used it on a local pond. i have the original Shebler carb, sprocket and chain starting assembly, and distributor that came along with. is there a way to date this engine without the tag? I doubt there is any way to date it at all. Unless Richard comes up with some adds which will give an aproximate date. Pics in adds were not accurate a lot of the time. Palmer admitted to makeing parts from wood and using pice from other years. If one of the biggies did it the tiny ones did for sure. Hope this helps Ernie |

thanks for the help Ernie. there is a patent date of 8-29-1911 on the gearbox so it was built sometime afterward. the engine turns over by hand very stiffly especially when both pistons are lined up across from each other half way up the bore, this is of course done with the two spark plugs out. should i dare pop the top and see whats going on? i have already taken off the top cover to the gear case and all looks well. Richard - is there anyway to read the engine makers name in the ad? And what is the date of Motor Boat magazine in case I have that one in my collection? Thanks Bob |
