This is small engine and is unique in that it is a 2 cycle with a trans fer port to a valve. The engine was a green color and there is indication that it had a tag. The tag is missing.

Unusual engine Keith! The crankcase design has a lot of features like on a Parker; the same but different. I recall seeing something similar in the 1909 Hiscox book. You also see something like it by the Hydrocarbon Motor Co in 1898 Hiscox. Judging from the crankcase design with the two removable bearings, it is early; probably 1900. The "uniflow" scavenging from top to exhaust port is very unusual also. Most of the manufacturers seem to have figured out loop scavenging by 1905 anf abandoned this type of design. |

Tom, I think it is an atmospheric valve that works based on pressures or vaccum. The crankcase builds pressure as the piston goes down during the power stroke. When the cylinder pressure drops to less than the crankcase pressure, the valve would open. Seems like a very inefficent system. |

Had been wondering about this 1898 Truscott, it also seems to have an atmospheric intake valve and chamber ?? This is only reference to this system in catalog !! Keith : Does that fascinating old engine have a flywheel ? May help with ID ?? I guess no deflector necessary on piston dome ?? |
