The writing says " Capitol Marine Conversio of the Curtiss OC-5 and OXX-6. "Enclosed is "Capitol" reverse gear and multiple disc clutch, reverses ration 1 to 1. Electric Starter and generator. One pair water jacketed exhaust manifold. New shallow base. Made by Auto Engine Worlks, Inc> Any help is appreciated. |

Theresa, Capitol Marine Gear is still in business. click here to go to their web page. Searching the net I fournd a lot of refrence to Curtiss OX-6 V-8 aircraft engines from 1917. Your pic is essentially a marine conversion of a Curtiss Aircraft engine. As to the exact year of this conversion I would guess late teens early 20's. Hope this helps Ernie |

Contact the Glen Curtiss Aircraft museum in Hammondsport NY with the serial number. They have a simular engine in their collection that came from a Horace Dodge Speedboat a friend of mine owns. The Rhinebeck Aerodrome ( WWI Aircraft era)in Rhinebeck New York is another possibility but they fret when they hear marine . Some very Early (mid 20's) Chris Craft speedboats used this conversion! |
