Hi I am new to this and have just bought a small putt putt with a twin Blaxland in it. I'd love to hear from anyone who can give me a bit of advice specifically re the problem I have where one of the sparkplugs is sparking to start with then stops ! The other is fine. I think it's a magneto/distributor issue as the plug and lead are fine when swapped over.
I'm also getting a lot of carbon on the plug thats working.
I'm getting a bit beyond the engine basics I'm familiar with.
Be great if there's anyone close by in Sydney (Lane Cove) that would be happy to show me the "how to" of the Blaxland
Thanks Rob

Have a good look at ALL of the wires.
It could be there is one that looks OK from the outside, but has broken inside. Once the engine starts and shakes things , the break happens.

You'll need to rig up a continuity tester - almost anything will do -I use an ohmmeter - while you are "testing" each wire.
A firm but gentle tug

It might also be the connection to the engine ground.

Pictures are always helpful

Running rough and having the plugs fouled up sounds like the engine is running way too rich.
So, the usual setting for a carby needle setting is 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns out from dead closed.

Next squirt some engine oil into the cylinder and turn the engine over with the plugs removed to seal the piston rings so you have compression.

Clean the plugs as best you can, put in a small bit of fuel to prime it, and give it a flip .
You will likely see a puff of blue smoke if it fires.
It you get backfire - that means it is set too lean - open the needle 1/8 turn, and repeat starting -
Once running you should be able to get it to run better by adjusting the needle - a small change and let it run for a minute - don't expect an instant reaction to any change.

thanks Miro your advice is very much appreciated - will give that a go. the intermittent spark I have discovered that the spark plug was shorting out. I've cleaned it up and it is fine now, probably need a new set - Autolite 3095 is waht is in there, you ddont happen to know the right plug gap and contact breaker gap do you ?
cheers mate - Rob

Generally the spark plug gap should be about 25-30 thou, and the contact is 12-15 thou.
All the best of the Season to you.
