...or the sump, rather. Trying to start my pup and after every start attempt the spark plug is gummed up with nasty oily gunk. So I think I need to clear out the cylinder and the sump. I know there is a sump plug...just hope it is easy to get off. Should I be pouring petrol through from the spark plug hole to flush it all out? Any tips?
I know I need to add 1/8th pint back into the sump but havent quite figured out how to do it ... would appreciate a pointer.
Really frustrating because the engine is right on the cusp of starting - its really willing but each time the gunk kills the spark!

Ok, so I drained the sump...the contents of which was muddy brown watery oil- more water than oil. Squirted some 2-stroke oil back up the plug-hole with a syringe (will do that again properly when my Castrol ST90 arrives...and with a bigger syringe).
I am nervous that the cooling water is getting into the cylinder...in which case the engine is cactus...
Got the the engine started! Running well but no water coming out with the exhaust. So now onto the forum ton see what might be going on.

Hi Gareth
Oil in the sump is not so important as the piston is lubed by the petroil mix. Refill the sump by applying oil in a fine drizzle squeeze bottle .
Obviously the motor will have to be running and at good revs.
Cactus is a distinct possibility -rusted water jacket .Water problem may be the valves not seating .Are you forcing water water ie hose or letting the pump do the work ? |

thanks for response.
Re: water - I have been letting the pump do the work. That was to be my next port of call: to take the pump apart and service it with new gland packing etc. Are you talking about the valves in the pump? Will be checking them as part of the service, perhaps spray a bit of silicone at the situation. |

I used to undo both valves and check for weed/sand then add one drop of engine oil to each before starting |
