Something light to relieve the gloom from broken motors. I found this Chapman and Sherack advertisement in a 1927 Australian boating magazine that came through the doors of Paynesville Maritime Museum. Thought it might be of interest. Rob |

Thanks Rob ,we could do with a bit of print nostalgia . I have a number of old ads like this one covering many Australian marine engines . I am prepared to post them over a period of time if members are interested ? |

Neil, as an Australian engine researcher, I can't have too many ads, so go for it. You would need a new thread, of course. Paul, if you are talking about a Chapman Pup, they only came out in mid 1926. Kevin, although the Record engine is well known, information is not that plentiful. It looks like they were new in 1946 and may have gone to 1958. Available in single and twin. At least the early engines used Australian Emmrox magnetos, a product of Pyrox, of spark plug fame. You probably know all that. I see there is an old Record thread, so will post a couple of ads from a 1948 Motor Spares Ltd catalogue. Eric |

Hi Eric - is that Chapman Pup or Rowboat Pup. From what I have been told the Rowboat Pup preceded the Chapman Pup. Is this the case? Paul |

Paul, contemporary literature describes the forthcoming row boat motor as the Pup. Row boat was only a description, not the model. Part of an April 1926 article says: "A new model marine motor to be known as the Chapman Pup is being produced by Chapman and Sherack, of Clara Street, Erskineville, Sydney. It has been designed especially for inboard instalallation in ordinary row-boats." And in A Chapman ad: "The new Chapman inboard rowboat motor known as the Chapman Pup, to be on the market in six weeks time..." I know it is dangerous in this field to to say never, but I believe the evidence for the 1926 Pup being the first of a new line of engines is pretty certain. Eric |

Hi Eric, yes the second Record engine I bought has the Emmrox mag as well as a Pyrox spark plug. Anything you have on the Record engines would be appreciated. Kev |

Hi Eric, this is my Chapman Rowboat Pup. You will notice on the name plaque the words Chapman Rowboat Pup. I was told this was discarded on later Chapman Pups. Paul |

Years ago I misread an engine name plate because of the way the text was laid out. I believe you are doing the same. Top line - Made in Australia, second line - Chapman Pup, third line - rowboat motor. I can be a stubborn old coot! The image below says it all. They are beautiful little engines whatever you call them. Eric

They are beautiful little engines whatever you call them! Hopefully mine will be running soon!It was under my dad's bench for 25 years and it 's been under mine for 30. Note the "after market" F/R gearbox in the photo. Paul |

@ Paul Satchell That is a wonderful little gearbox! I bet everyone with a similar, small inboard engine, would like one of these! Does anyone know where a 1:1 reversing g'box like this could be found - even if it was made for a different application? [The trouble these days is that a gearbx is likely to have an unwanted reduction ratio / or too big/ ugly/ or have a dropped-level output shaft.] One application that may be adaptable, if found big enough, is a 'reversing chuck'?,..; a device that reverses a thread-cutting tap out of its hole, whilst the drill-press is still running ahead. Please write if anyone can point us to a pretty g'box like this, which is available today. Thanks! Greg |
