Hi, the last few times I have been out in the boat I have been getting quite a bit of water coming in from the water pump. Before I go out I grease the shaft and make sure the top part of the plunger set up has been tightened up. Does anyone have any clues why the water is coming out of the plunger set up?
Its a 3HP Master Pup.
Thanks Michael

Either the gland packing in the pump is worn
or the piston/housing clearance is too great
due to wear.

Yes. Any well equipped chanldery or marina should have it.you can buy it by the inch, thats how they
charge you for it.
you will need enough for 3 rings.
Dont just coil it round 3 times, but cut 3 separate
rings, and put the joints opposite each other
You will need about a foot of it 3/16" teflon gland packing.Dont use the graphite impregnated stuff ,
especially on stern glands. It does terrible things to you prop shaft.the flax or hemp packing is ok but wears out quickly and can mark the piston/shaft if done up too tightly

Hi Todd, I finally got some 3/16 teflon packing and tried to fit on the weekend but found that there was no way the water pump piston would pass through the packing, is 3/16 the correct size. Thanks Michael

sorry ,my mistake/typo, should be 1/8th.You can get away with gently tapping it thinner with a small hammer to make it a bit thinner. Sorry ,Todd
