Hi all,
On the bottom of my carby (model D) i have some drops of fuel which are coming out of the drain valve on the bottom. What is the best way to seal this-

Is the fuel coming through the valve? These are tapered plug valves, pushing them in as you turn helps to seat them. There is a special valve grease for lubing and sealing, may not last long if used with gasoline. Be sure the fuel isn't leaking around the nut that holds the adjusting needle, that is a common leak. |

i have circled in the below image where the fuel is leaking from. The needle valve is fine- just seems to be coming out from the thread on the bottom of the carby. Not sure if there is a type of locktite that could be used-

Is it leaking from the thread ? if so unscrew it ,clean it,apply a small amount of loctite 243 ,or Stag ,then refit it.
If it is leaking from the valve itself ,remove the whole valve/cock ,carefully take apart,clean and inspect the two mating surfaces of the tapered valve/cock . If not too badly scored,you can lapp them again using very fine paste,and then metal polish. When you reassemble ,check the tension of the spring that keeps the two pieces firmly engaged.You may have to "tweak it a bit.
When using this style of valve ,push gently in to
help the spring seat the assembly when shutting off. Dont forget that this is a drain valve and on occasions not only will fuel pass through ,but also water,grit and other nasties that will have a damaging affect on the sealing faces.
If you find it is beyond redemption . you can
(A)buy a 1/8 gas plug and just fit it with loctite /stag
(B) buy a 1/8 gas ball valve (approx $12)but a bit modern looking.
(C)use the drain valve from a brass/copper auto radiator. (this was also a standard fitment from new)
