Hi All
I really would like a gearbox for my super pup, I want reverse, its just so handy. Does any one know where i can get one, or of a gearbox manufacturer that might have something i could fit between the motor and the shaft.

A very good question! I would like to know too, if inline AND direct [ no gear reduction ] 'island' boxes are available, with mounting at shaft height!??
I have often reversed the crank rotation of the engine whilst running, but ideally you need a helmsman AND a }keen engineer aboard to do this with safe reliability.

I am with you both, I have been looking for a blaxland forward and reverse box but with no luck . A reverse would be excellent instead of having to reverse the engine by twinging the mag 180 deg .
Maybe we can re fabricate a blaxland box from new from drawings if we could get en exploded diagram of the box . What do you think ??? or is there a simple box similar available

I have seen a couple of setups a few years ago using a CLAE gearbox. The CLAE boxes were originally integral and share oil with the engine so they had a plate on the front to keep the oil in and provide for mounting points.

A bit of machining work but CLAE boxes are easy enough to find.

Cheers,

Mark S.

Oh Wow, Thanque Mark S. What a handy tip! As we know a lot of old seawater cooled engines 'ave lost their cylinder blocks first, and are well outlasted by their own bottom-end/ And probably their G'box too! The adapter plate is not too much an engineering feat, even if it has to house an additional input shaft's bearing. As these can be bought with flange/face-mount housings. This could be installed first over a rough hole in the plate to hold it in alignment b4 the stud pattern of bolt holes are marked-out. The new bearing will already have it's own oil seal, and will seal in it's housing. Do these boxes have their own baseplate mounting?

All sounds good thanks,all.
I have an Albin 021 with a blown water jacket, im heading off to the garage and check out the gear box, The only prob i can see with this solution is the shear size of these gearboxes, i was realy hoping for something much smaller. but hey.

Also simplex made what they call an 'island gearbox' which is the same internals as the integral one buit in it's own housing an has a 4 bolt flange. I have a coulpe of those as well as a blaxland box. They do come up ocassionally but take a lot of searching. The simplex but is detailed in the 5/7 manual.
Cheers Tim.

The little Blaxland gearbox is a constant mesh type - gear to layshaft to chain with sliding dog "clutch" between to achieve reverse. The grunt of the Superpup is a concern. The island gear boxes have an internal clutch for ahead and band brake for astern. Capable of handling more power and gives gentle power takeup. Should replace thrust bearing if dismantled. You will need a capable and friendly machinist if converting.
