Hi, I have had the boat for a new months - the first couple of times it was running smoothly, the next time i took it out it started to sound a bit rough and the most recent times i have been on it the engine will start and idle, but as soon as i engage into gear the engine immideatly stalls. The Prop is free. Any suggestions on where to start on the engine?? Many thanks, Craig |

Does it restart without choking or priming? if so Its is not a fuel problem, If it doesn't your running lean, Clean the fuel system. also just for good measure check for play up and down in the main bearings. You didnt mention how much time was on the engine. It does sound like a lean condition though |

Gents, I do not profess to be an expert in tuning Blaxlands (or any other OME). I've had my Blaxland twin for about 20 years and tuning becomes a problem for me if I don't use the boat regularly (say once a month or so). I have not experienced the problem of stalling when engaging the clutch when the motor is cold but certainly when it is warm the motor can run like a hairy goat at low throttle or stall if the mixture is not right. I'd be checking the mixture when warm and the float level (remembering that if it still has a cork float it may need to be dried and shellac coated and I understand that ethanol fuel and shellac are not compatible). For good measure I'd also check the plug leads and try turning the motor over when the clutch is engaged. Remember the prop may be free when the clutch is disengaged but engaging the clutch draws the shaft and prop forward a few cms. This problem also raises the question of whether the motor should be run out of fuel when it is stopped or is it best just to leave shut the fule off and leave fuel in the carby. I don't run mine 'dry' but always use fresh fuel after it has been left for more than a month or so. I look forward to hearing of the problem being resolved. |

Check your timing, points, cap, plugs By the way I suspect your motor is a 5/7hp Check for perfect shaft alignment as the engine may have moved, the shaft may spin freely when the clutch is disengaged, but when engaged poor alignment can cause binding etc, plus other damage to shaft, clutch, engine etc. Is it a cone or finger clutch? |
