Hi Anyone any suggestion on tightness of nuts on engine bed bolts for 3.5HP Blaxlnd Chapman motor. They became a bit loose so I have tightened them up to reduce play

Tight as possible, but dont strip the threads
If the motor has come loose you will have to
realign it otherwise you will damage the crank,
clutch assy,prop shaft,and stern glands.
If they have become loose ,it is for a reason
1 timber in beds rotten or soft
2 Misalignment between engine and shaft
3 Wear in parts generating vibration
4 Fatigue in the fastens themselves
5 corrosion either in the engine base plate
or the fasteners
Remember only a max of 0.004' discrepancy
allowed between the coupling faces

Hi Todd,
Yeah! I've got the same problem, one of the many things I have to fix before my boat can get back into the water. Sorry for missing the regatta, sounds like it was a success. Looking at the photo's though, my poor old working boat would look a bit out of place amongst all of the "gentlemen's launches"
Bruce.

I dunno Bruce,the more the merrier,their were a
few with added patina there.Besides which some
boats have features and fittings which have that
"little something"that comes with age and use that
although very beautiful, some of the newer, restored
vessels never quite have

Hi Todd,
Many thanks for your advice.I dont think the looseness was due to any of the 5 points you listed ,but rather to having "putted" around for the last 30yrs, the nuts loosened gradually.I have tightened them up firmly and added another nut to each bolt to lock the situation down.I will keep a sharp eye out for any untoward developments with motor/clutch etc
