Hello,
I am hoping that someone will tell me if it is appropriate to post messages regarding a 1957ish Universal Explorer Six. I recently found a beautiful 1942 launch with this engine. I would like to research the original motor, but that will have to wait. The engine is complete and there are clues that it was stored well - it has not been turned in 20 years. I have not tried to turn.
I am primarily looking for possile parts sources, general engine info, manuals, wiring diagrams, etc. - I don't even know if its a 6 or 12 volt yet. I assume 12 was an option.
I found the link on the history of Universal through this page and that has already been a big help.
Finding a manual would be a great first step if anyone has any thoughts.
Let me know if its more appropriate to look elsewhere.

It's fine to post that question here... certainly is an "old marine engine".
I have a lot of Universal material but I don't recall an "explorer six", did it have another name or do you know the displacement of the engine?
Maybe someone else can help.

Here are some more clues from a photocopy of an original spec sheet. This sheet, from the previous owner, shows specs for the Aqua-Pak Explorer Six Model OKVD. Mine is model "OK" - it is not the vee-drive and has a typical in-line transmission. I assume the engine specs would be shared between OKVD and OK.
Available in 1957
Explorer Six (on water manifold)
Model OK
100 HP
3200 rpm
230 cu.in.
Serial # 102 170
Big flathead (I think thats the term)- reminds me of my friends Gray 109
Thats about all I have. Would be neat to see it his thing has some life.

From what I have been able to find out, that engine was based on the QXLD Hercules block. I can supply you with the Hecules QXLD overhaul manual. Additionally that same engine was sold as a Nordberg Arrow and there is a Nordberg service and parts manual which I have. I think that Universal bought Nordberg in about 1957.

Hi. Steve. I had an explorer six with a 2-1 reduction. great engine. I,m attemting to get it back from the guy I gave it to. he can,t use it. I still have an engine manual for this. Let me know what info you need and I,ll look it up. Jim |

I have one to sell that runs complete power train engine prop trans and shaft for $500.00 but you beter move cause I am about to scrap it out there is a book with a list of parts ect for a lot of the universal engines with it. price is firm |
