I bought a 1979 Cat30 with an Atomic 4 engine last August. It kept cutting out after running for about 1/2 hr, then after waiting about an hour or so, it would start with no problems. We replaced the Coil and it was fine for the rest of the season (early October). Started this season in End April, and up till today, all was well. It did it again, just died and after about 2 hours, it started up perfectly. Anyone have any suggestions? |

If it is a coil that needs an external resistor (the original type) and doesn't have one, it will overheat. |

Also be sure that the ignition switch is in the off position when the engine is not running. A coil can heat up to the point of blowing apart if it is on but the engine is not running. |

I agree that it sounds like a coil symtom but it is possible that the problem is a bad condenser. Condensers are notorious for being bad, brand new, right out of the box. Always be suspicious of new condensers right after replacing them. |

A shorting condenser could also cause that. |
