The Universal engine (Type N) on this portable fire pump appears to be essentially the same as the Universal marine inboard NF except the design was modified for the specific application - the flywheel faces the pump, the crank is on the outer end, and it has a governor. I would much appreciate a copy of a service manual and/or catalog for the N, NF, etc., series or any Universal model that is close to this one. Even an ad depicting this arrangement would be quite helpful. Could the muffler be original? What is the date range for this engine? What does the notation on the edge of the Universal tag (WS-46, see photo) indicate?
