I'm not new to old hit/miss engines but am new to
marine engines. I have a chance to buy a 8 HP
Hicks and would like some/any information on them and
possibly some literature sources. Thank you very much. Fred Schultz

Fred,

I don't know of much in the way of specific literature on the Hick's engines. Collectors may have Hicks catalogs that they will copy for you.

The Hicks is a very interesting and desirable four cycle open base marine engine. If it is in reasonable condition and a reasonable price, you should try to get it.

We have various Hicks info and pictures on a page on this site. You can also use the "keyword search" link on the left and search the word Hicks.

Hicks is also covered in some of Stan Grayson's Books.

Regards,
Andrew

Fred,

Also the San Francisco Maritime Museum is a possible resource. The have a good library and have an assortment of marine engine literature.

They have a couple of Hicks engines.

Andrew,

Back in Nov a thread by captbill indicated that
you have information by Mark Stretch concerning
rust and salt corrosion. How might I go about
getting a copy of it? I'm still waiting for
pictures of the Hicks. Thank you very much.

Fred,

Here is the link to Mark's articles: click here. It is also linked from our technical page.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I'm still waiting for pictures of the Hicks".... do you mean that you are waiting for pictures of the one you are hoping to buy, or are you waiting for something from me?

Regards,
Andrew

interested in. Hopefully, they will be here soon.
Be in touch. Thanks.

Fred
