Hi, I am just about to put back together my 1948 R3M which I bought off ebay. I have had the head and block off, cleaned out water ways, and it all looks good. Just a thought before I put it all back, and use the new gaskets. Is there a way of telling whether the crank seals are ok (I have never had this engine running). I don't want to waste the expensive gaskets and then find it won't start. |

Mark ...crankcase compression, you would no doubt have the original Stuart seals . These are OK but it is difficult to tell if they are working properly . I tried once with pressure gauges etc but it is just as easy to pull the engine down and fit neoprene seals . They are good and if you pull your engine down take the measurements eg inside diam of the crankcase bearing housing and the od of the crank journal . Better still take these parts to your friendly bearing supplier and they will have the correct size. Have you considered making your own gaskets ? I make all mine . You just need a small ball pein hammer, a set of wad punches and a block of soft wood. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` `````````````````` |

I will try to start the engine soon, having put it back together. The compression feels good, so hopefully... Just one problem - the magneto kicks out quite a current - enough to be unpleasant if you hold the end of the HT lead. But the plug won't spark. I know the pug is ok, so does the magneto need to be delivering an even bigger charge to get the plug to spark? Any tips? |

Mark ,it is no good unless you get a nice spark across the spark plug electrodes. Unpleasant ? it should give you a real JOLT ! Check the following ,can you feel a intermitant resistance when you turn the magneto. This is to do with the magnetism of the rotor . If there is no feeling of this then it would need to be re magnetised. Also check the points gap about 12 thou .Make sure the brass contact strip on the HT coil is contacting the HT spark plug lead ,you will have to remove the Bakerlite cap to check this . If all fails change you spark plug. |

Peter, thanks for the advice. I think the magnetism is ok, as several days ago it was sparking, so something has happened since...? Another re-build question. Setting up the engine for testing - what's the best way to set up the water cooling - presumbly you need a gravity feed of cold water, or some pressure like you would get through a seacock? |

There 's probably not much wrong with your magneto Mark if it was ok a couple of days ago .....check the contact point they may have opened up a bit. Cooling you can do it with a bucket and some hose ...not nessesary to gravity feed it your pump will suck it up if you prime it first. |

Re Lucas Magneto - seems almost universally condemned as pretty useless bit of kit when you look it up on the web. Has anyone tried fitting an electronic system to an R3M? |

We are rebuilding a Stuart P6D Engine for our sailing boat. Unfortunately we are lacking of any technical documentations about the engine and are seeking} for the following information: - Type and Specification of Ignition Coil and Spark Plug - Ignition Point - Spark elektrode gap Woul be great if somebody coul help. |
