Actualy the motor still goes, but does not generate enough oomph to turn the prop with any gusto. The magneto seems to do it's thing somewhere between TDC and M (a couple of degrees out maybe). The engine gives a wheezy little backfire now and again, and if I add half a finger in front of the air intake the revs seems to pick up a bit. So how critical is the timing. or am I more likely looking at a fueling problem. I would appreciate some advice on how to reset the timing ( to eliminate that possibility). If anyone has some annotated photos of the bits that I need to adjust, that would help hugely. At the moment the exhaust is directed through the transom via a nice big rubber tube. I would like to make the boat a little quieter. Does anyone have any suggestions. Are there any other Stuart Turner owners in the Peel inlet area near Mandurah, Western Australia? I know of at least one. Cheers Simon McCracken |

Simon.........sounds like fuel . Your engine would have the carburettor with the fixed fuel /air jets. Sounds like you may have a partly blocked jet. Ignition timing is not that critical ,from your description you sound to be pretty close .To get it right line up the M on the flywheel with the centre of the cylinder [there is no actual mark].If you call the cylinder nearest the flywheel No 1. At this point the magneto contact points should be just starting to open. To adjust you will have to loosen the nut on the chain sprocket just enough to be able to turn the magneto without moving the piston from the M position. When you are satisfied that this is OK lock it all up again and you should be right. But do check your fuel system .....starting from the tank ,fuel lines ,filters and carb jets. There are couple of P55 powered boats in Albany ,dont know about the Peel region |

Peter, you were quite right. I stripped down the carb and there was a small sliver of paint blocking one of the holes in the ??? main jet??? Naturally I dropped the other smaller jet into the bilge below the engine, so the clean up was mostly a recovery operation. I have just returned from a 4 hour journey up the Murray river to Pinjarra and back. No problems, so thank you. |
