Hi everyone,

Delighted to say that progress has been made on the R3M I've been doing up. Last gasket has arrived and will be fitted next time I get to the boat. Last job has then been to change the oil, and I have got myself confused. So far as I can tell there are three oil points:
- crankcase
- timing chain
- gearbox

timing chain and gearbox haven't caused probs, drained out of the plugs on the water-pump side of the engine, then refilled through the top.

Crank case has confused me. drained a small amount of filthy black sludge from the squared-off plug on the left side of the engine (looking at the flywheel) and my understanding is that this is lubricated by the oil in the fuel (turning the crank with the plug open you can hear the compression wheezing in this chamber)

So why then is there a dipstick on the side of the cylinder which never showed below half full when I drained all the other oils. Have I missed another drain plug?! Is there a separate oil for the crankcase as well as the petrol-mixed oil? I certainly remember seeing quite a lot swilling around when I took the head off and not that much has drained out of the square plug.

Thanks very much for tips as ever!
Ben

Hi Ben. If its the same as my R3M the plug you are talking about is simply a crankcase drain, handy for draining excess fuel/oil mix if you really flood the engine trying to start it.The dipstick is for the gearbox level, cant think why its shows a level if you drained the gearbox...was the engine in a position where all the oil would have come out the drainplug?? There is no separate crankcase oil ..purely a 2 stroke. The stuff you saw swilling around was probably residual fuel/oil or even water mix and would have drained away when you took the crankcase drainplug out. Sounds like u need to flush out your crankcase and drainplug hole (if youve got the head and cylinder off). Does it run ?? Keep us all posted.Regards Dave.

Hi Ben ,What David has told I could not add to . I hope you are successful in your restoration . The R3 is a great little engine ,so reliable . Mine is not in a boat ,just a rally engine but it attracts attention. At moment ,amongst other things I am restoring a R3 lighting plant .

Hi guys,

Many thanks for your replies. I'm delighted to say that the engine is now up and running beautifully, starting on a few cranks the 3 or 4 times I gave her a go. Below are a few pictures of it in case you want to see before and after. We're racing to get the boat it's in finished for the summer so this year I just did the necessary stuff on the engine. Hopefully over the winter we'll disassemble the last bits and finish the repaint so it'll give us many years of happy pottering to come.

As for the gearbox oil, I drained a bit more off after I gave it the first run and it had mixed up a bit more cloudy old oil, so I guess I'll give it a few flushes and refreshes for the first few times I use it so it's got good fresh oil going forward.

it's a 12' launch. We think it's an old pleasure boat from the river at Beer, Devon. Not sure how fast this 1.5 hp will send it!
