Hello, This is a question from a newbie! I have just purchased a petrol engine powered 7.25" locomotive (Hudswell Clarke Narrow Gauge) that is powered by a Stuart Turner P5. Now unlike this boating lot that have unlimited supplies of cooling water (effectively an open circuit!) I have a closed circuit and will require a radiator and possibly a cooling fan. Does anybody have any idea of what sort of size radiator I may need, or indeed how I could find out. For example could I use one from a mini, or from a fiesta, mondeo etc? Also, is the water pump on a P5 man enough for a closed (possibly slighly pressurised) system? All (clean) suggestions gratefully received. Cheers Peter To see where it will operate have a look at www.lmandwr.co.uk |

Peter....sound like a good use for a P5 . I display three Stuarts Turners at ralleys . A R3M ,a P5 and a P55. All with tank cooling . My suggestion would be to use a small radiator [Mini]and a thermostatic Fan . The pump would not stand a positive pressure very well . It wont destroy it but it will leake past the gland.Just use a non pressurised system with and expansion tank to give you that added water capacity. Are you using the standard reversing gear box ....should be an interesting unit . I did hear of some one using a P55 to power a ride on mower. They used the reversing box very well. |

What splendid idea - it should sound great! The marine engine water pump has quite a small capacity as it is intended to allow the engine to operate at its proper temperature when fed with a continuous supply of cold water (ISTR the manual states what the approx outlet temp should be). Thus it is not ideal for a closed sytem where the feed temperature might be expected to rise a fair bit over time but, with a decent sized rad and fan it should be ok - i'd go for the largest that can be coveniently accomodated in the loco. |

Thanks for the replies. I am collecting the loco in a couple of weeks time and I will then have a better idea of what space I've got for a radiator/fan. I've never played with a Stuart Turner before (I don't even know if it will start!) so I'm looking forward to this new learning curve! I'll put some pictures up on my website when I've got it. It will be on www.lmandwr.co.uk which is the trainset where it will be running. Cheers Peter |
