Please help. I have recently bought a 16ft wood boat with a P55 engine but it had water on the top of no'1 Piston. I replaced head gasket and exhaust gaskets and gasket between crankcase and cylinder block, but i still have water getting into the cylinders and crankcase. I have checked for cracks, cant find any. Thanks |

Syd.........A bit hard to give you a specific direction . Water can only enter the internals at an interface ,ie where the water is seperated by a gasket.Due to the age of these engines you may find that the expansion chamber cover may be a good place to look . There is a only a small surface here to seal . Check that there is a flat surface for the gasket . There are quite a lot of waterways here and they become eroded at the edges and could allow an ingress of water. This is the kind of problem to look for. You just have to check every sealing / interface . Please if you find the problem give us some feedback. |

Just removed cylinder head and block again and checked for any wear on waterways, seems ok. Checked brass tubes which are all fairly flush with block. Have just noticed small pinhole in the cylinder head on top of no'1 piston, next to plug. Have put under pressure and found a jet of water coming out of it. I am sure this is the problem. I am now trying to aquire an new cylinder head. Many Thanks. |

Glad you found the problem Terry ,sorry you have to source a new head . Consider a repair to the head if you can not find another . |

Repair to the head ...........depends on the extent of the damage. If you dont have the facilities then take it to a specialist welding workshop. They will either braze the hole or cast iron weld . If it is as you describe only a pin hole then as long as there is enough of the parent metal around it any easy repair. I am sure that you will be able to obtain a suitable replacement head ,especialy in the UK. I have used one of these epoxy fillers for water jacket repairs but in your case the hole is in the combustion space and the temperature involved may be too high . Dont give up ....try to find a suitable epoxy in the UK that will stand the combustion temp. Many years ago i used a very good product ,from memory it was Thistle bond Eppigen.....try a Google search. |

For starters unscrew the spark plugs and then try and so on working thru the more obvious problems. It's just a matter of elimination. |
