I have been building up a collection of Stuart engines & lighting sets in readiness for my emigration (and retirement) to Botswana sometime this year when I should have time to play with them.I currently have the following:- 1/2HP open crank, 1/4 HP open crank, 400, 800 kit to build,4 x R2 & R3 lighting sets (12v & 24v), P4 lighting set (12v), P6C Marine, & 3 more R2/R3 engines.Perhaps someone can help with the following info as I have not yet worked on any of these engines. What is the difference between the R2 & R3 engines, as I have R2 engines with flywheel mags & ordinary Lucas mags?. I would also like to date the following :- R2Y lighting set No 37406, P4Y lighting set 13391, R2Y lighting set 38888, P6C 19A482 (almost unused believed to be from a college). Unfortunately the other lighting sets do not have original engines on them.Any help would be appreciated.I am also currently looking for the 2 open crank engines that are missing from my collection namely the Sandhurst & the 600.Any replies will be appreciated.

Do you have pictures of these posted on the net anywhere. I sure would like to see them. I havent heard of a gen-set being called a lighting sets, but I guess its a regional thing.
Im always amazed at the products that were made, and didn't make it to our market place.

Robin - I'm glad to find another Stuart enthusiast. I can provide some answers to some of your questions but first I'll do a bit of work. I have quite a few manuals of various types and a lot of guide sheets for magnetos, carbys, installations, accessories etc as well as stories from magazines.

I've got a P4 genset, P5 marine and several P55s marine and one P55 in my boat. Also, got quite a few parts though many orphan items that came from an agent here in Australia.

Check out Kim Siddorn's pics - some 40 odd - of Stuart engines on the web. Do a search on "Stuart engine" and you'll soon find it.

I'll get back to you with some answers

Difference between R2 and R3 is the bore. I believe the early R2's were fitted with flywheel mags. your best bet for dating is Fairways Marine.

There was a Sandhurst on ebay recently, didn't draw a single bid, probably due to four-figure starting price, so vendor may be open to offers. See:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6513863898

Guess you need a P3, an N and perhaps one of the twins to complete the set ;-)

Thank you to those who have replied to my posting.I will sort some pictures of some of the engines for interest in the near future. There are some restoration projects but most are sound & just need cleaning & painting.I have now agreed a deal on the Sandhurst mentioned on Ebay. Still looking for the 600 in particular.

Robin - I have ranges of manfacture dates for various models. You can work out a rough manufacture dates from the info, as follows:

R2 #37406 falls in the R2 range #30,000-38,899 manfactured over the period May 1934 to March 1958.

P4Y #13391 falls in the P4/P5 range #11,150-15,999 manfactured over the period June 1936 to December 1953.

R2Y #38,888 falls in the same range as the other R2.

P6C #19A482 falls in the range #19A400 to 19A536 manfactured over the period June 1969 to March 1975.

we can provide you with history for your engines and any parts that you may need.
37406 was sold to Meakes in Marlow 11/11/1952
13391 was sold to Robert Rix for the Bank of England as a special 25/4/1946.
38888 was for Hillyards 5/3/1958 as a marine gen set.
We can send you copies of the original pages on the ledgers for all the stuarts ever made for a small fee or free if you are buying parts.
The biggest difference between the r2 and r3 is the piston and block size we do have lots of parts for these engines
Kind regards
david

Richard - I have a list of range for engine numbers for specficied period so can give you an approximate date.

#19A400 to #19A536 were manfactured over the period June 1969 to March 1975. You can work an approx date from this info. Just assume even numbers were produced over that period.

David Pickop of Fairways Marine may supply you with the exact date from their records.

Can any one help me with any historic information especially how the batteries need to be connected . This unit has been running in the last few years The previous owner died before I could get the info I require.
If thre is a chance to get a manual it would be great
