My single cylinder stuart turner P5 has developed a very annoying problem. Last summer it would start ok (but with a bit of know-how!), and would run lovely all day but when coming out of drive and engage into reverse it would die(which as you can imagine was a real pain when attempting to moor bows first). This last week however it has started to play a new game, it will start and run in drive for 10 mins but will then splutter and die, if left for 10 mins it will start and run for 4-5 mins but again die. this is terrible when battling against river tide. Is it over heating, carb problems or needs de-coking? Any clues would met with great thanks. |

Julian ...I would have a good look at your fuel system ,ie from the tank filler cap [ make sure the small hole in the cap is clear] right through to the carb . Make sure the fuel is flowing . There may be a blockage some where. This is s good place to start . |

Julian, I am no expert, but I have inherited a Stuart Turner P5ME with my present boat. Fortunately it had been fully restored, but because it had been left over a year without being winterised etc I had a Stuart expert look over it. Previous owner complained with the symptoms you describe. The solution was to clear the lump of dirt in the filler cap of the fuel tank, flush out the old petrol, clean the gunge built up in the carb, and fit a piece of flexible hose from the carb to the on/off tap. Apparently this prevents airlocks in the fuel system. Very important to use the exact fuel oil mixture. The engine ran perfect all last season, even when hot. good luck Mat |

Chris dont just rely on seeing a spark at the plug. Whenever i find an old magneto I hold the bare lead when i spin the magneto. If you get a kick there is a strong chance that with a bit of care the unit will be ok.......try it. |
