Hi there,

Over the last few years I have popped onto this site and perused the odd tale here and there and like with many similar sites the wealth of knowledge and helpful folk on here is second to none.

Well here's my 1st post, I have in the last year become the proud owner of a 1930 built 19ft launch fitted with a lovely P55ME engine. We restored many aspects of the vessel but the Stuart (ST) seemed all sound and ran fine. We launched the vessel two weeks ago and the ST was fine, started lovely and after a smokey start, it cleared and motored us about beautifully (it ran for about 7 hrs without a problem). However, on the third trip out, just as I was coming in to moor the engine cut out. I had to prime the carb and it took an age to see any fuel appear when flooding, it started and ran fine for a further 5 mins.
The next day, I cleaned out the fuel filter as there was a little bit of crud in there and tried to get it running once more, it started, ran for a minute and then cut out once more. I tried once again and now can't get it to start. When flooding the carb I noticed that under the main jet there was fuel dripping into the tray, this was a steady drip. I have very little knowledge on the engine and am unsure if I should see fuel leaking out at this part? The only issue appears to be that it's not getting fuel and I'm having to prime to get fuel into the carb.

So for the massive ramble, just thought it would help and any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Adam.

I have just noticed my pic failed to attach to my message, trying againStuart Solex Carb Main jet

It was from under this joint with the jet assembly that the fuel was dripping - should it be able to leak out here?

I removed and cleaned out the solex carb. There was some old pasty muck in and around the jet assembly and needle. I then flushed out the tank, fuel line and refilled with fresh fuel. Also cleaned up the plugs and it started on the button and ran beautifully. So fingers crossed my problem is solved.

I still can't locate these damn crank case drain plugs. Can anyone please post a picture or email me one?

Hi Adam, I have one of these on my Stuart P55. There is nothing much to go wrong. You have cleaned it and that is about all you can do. I find it does leak a bit as there is no gasket on the top of the float bowl. The only way to alter fuel level is to be sure the carby is roughly level when underway.

As for crankcase drain plugs- I have never opened them and my engine runs well. They are on the legs of the motor right down near the base plate.
