have just bought stuartturner 55, runs beautifully in idle but when put in gear and increase the throttle speed, it overrevs and farts ,
sounding like a cessna after landing...
any thoughts

Sounds like it is either too lean or the ignition timing is not correct.

Not very many things to go wrong on them really. We could all aspire to an engine that runs like a Cessna. So does that mean that it only over-revs for a second or two, does the Cessna imitation and then dies? If you flick her out of gear does the over-revving stop and does she go back to an even tickover? Is the throttle opening a lot when you put her into gear? You can see that easily. Easy to adjust.... If you don't touch the throttle does she still run?
Sounds like fuel to me. Check the carb and check that the fuel runs freely.

all of the above . When I increasethe throttle slightly in gear it goes into hi revs , I pput into neutral and it dies off ,decrease the throtttle put into gear and it puts along , with no ability to accelerate ....

Chris Are you pushing the gear lever fully to the 3:00 O'Clock position? That is from Neutral, push it around 90 degrees to the right for Forward. A lot of owners just push it in about 45 degrees and it will slip. If you are going through 90 degrees then it indicates that the cones are worn. Is it OK in Reverse?. There is an adjustment in the gearbox where the lever tower bolts on. Suggest you join the ST Yahoo group who have all the manuals on their site for free.

What oil are you running in the gearbox? It should be straight engine oil.
There are a couple of guys running P55 stuarts around Melbourne, Get in touch with the Wooden Boat Association of Australia VIC Division who may be able to help as well.

Cheers,
Dave

have sorted the problem , a reverse prop was fitted to the boat
by previous owner. This wascausing the boat to work under pressure , but slide beautifully thru the water at speed in reverse!
now i am after a suitable prop.

I have a Stuart Turner P66, 10 B.H.P Marine Engine, standing in a locker. It looks as good as new and I intend to install it in my boat (a Halcyon 23 sailing cruiser). Before doing so I would like to have it properly checked and tested by somebody who knows these engines well. I am prepared to bring the engine to you if you are not too far from London.
cheers
Christos

Yes Steve, I did ask the same question back in 2010 but then I was away for a long time. Now I am back and want to sort out the engine so I can use it on my boat.
I live in SW17, the boat is in Kent (Erith) and the engine at a friend's locker in Hackney!
If you think you can help with the engine then I can bring it to you at Greenford.
Best
Christos

Thanks Steve. We will arrange a day then, after easter.
As I said the engine is at the moment sitting at my friends locker in Hackney so I will have to speak to him first and then give you a ring.
best Christos
