I wonder if someone can help me? I have just bought a boat with a 10 hp Stuart Turner Petrol engine in it. It says to use a mix of 20/50 oil in the fuel. Could anyone recommend to me the best oil to use. Many thanks.

Hi Simon, welcome aboard. Straight SAE 30 is the best if you can get it. I get it from Fuchs in NZ but any vintage car bod would direct you. There was a discussion on this some years ago which you will be able to find. Two stroke oil will do but has some minor problem and I forget the details. The proportion is 1:48 oil/petrol.

hi simon! use valvoline standard two stroke oil in 50 to 1 mixture! works well, never had a problem! SAE 30 will foul your sparkplugs at idle or slow running. Don't use marine grade two stroke as it's semi synthetic and won't lubricate the main bearings correctly!
cheers paul

Reference various enquiries regarding the correct oil specification for the 2-stroke Stuart Turner marine engines. I have a P5MC which is my next engine to be restored and its owners manual states:- SAE30 oil at the ratio of 1/3rd of a pint in a 2 gallon can (20cc in 1 litre). I have a J2 Kelvin marine engine in my canal narrow boat and this engine also requires a SAE30 low detergant oil. 3 oils I can suggest are:- CASTROL CLASSIC XL (which I use), MORRIS OILS Golden Film SAE30 and SILKOLENE OILS Chatsworth 30 Classic (Silkolene is part of the FUCHS group). All these oils are low detergent oils and are also the reccomended oil for engines that have no oil filters (as per a large number of historic marine engines).
