Hi All
New member from Western Australia, I have just bought a Stuart P55, it has good compression but I cant get it to start I had it runnning a bit but was missing and didn't run very well, I have checked all the regular things but it does not have much suction at the carberettor, are there any checks or signs that can be made to indicate leaking crankshaft seals Thanks for any help
regards Barry

Barry, if the gearbox has black coloured oil in it it is a sign of the rear seal is worn, and also if the back of the flywheel has oil on it its a good pointer that the front oil seal is also worn.
Good seal between the carby and block can also go a great way to fixing starting problems.
Check the crankcase drains to see that you only have black oil and fuel coming out as this is as good as any place for water coming from a cooling leak to end up, this will also impede fuel detonation.
Matt and Ron.

Hi matthew thank for the reply, I pulled the dip stick half out and put some liquid soap around the seal, it pulsed (blew) a bit when turning the enginge over also I put a compound pressure gauge on the drain holes, the best I could get was about 4psi and 3 inches of murcury with and without the carby hole blocked does this mean a strip down

I am no expert but i would exhaust all other options before doing the seals, did much oil and petrol leak from the drains? as this is a good sign fuel is getting to the cylinders,
Also magneto timing and spark strength are also a major factor in getting these engines started, there is a fair wack of info on this site that gives advice on stuart starting problems.
Matt.
