About 25 years ago I rebuilt a Stuart engine, I have the manual for it but I am not sure if it is a P4 or P5.It is water cooled, single cylinder. I had it running but have not touched it since, reading these pages has rekindled my interest now that I am retired. Are there many of these engines still around and when did they go out of production. Keith Ainsworth |

Six head bolts are all P5. 4 head bolts it could be a P4 or P5. Look under the paint on head to see a No 1067 its a P5, dont know whats on a P4. |

Hello Keith I don't know the number of engines that still exist, but there is an active interest in them. A group exists on Yahoo by the name of STINFOEXCHANGE. They have several files of data available for group members to view. Dave B |

Hi I have a 1948 P5 4HP I know that this is not right, but . . . In 1948 the P4 was superceded. Initially ST used the same block & separate, 2 piece expansion chamber as on the P4, but uprated the performance to 5HP and redesignated it P5 My engine has number 14778 |

Hi Keith, Stuart Turner finished making the marine engines in 1976. Fairways took that side over but was wound up two or three years ago. Marlex brought most of the stock. However I have a reasonable level of bits for the single cylinder engines including full top end gasket sets. I also have restored engines for sale. |

Keith, I have a list showing all ST engines manufacturing dates and series. Let me have your engine number and I will give you the approx. date of build. |

I have rebuilt my single cylinder P5 but it will not run. I have put ptrol down the plug and it runs a few turns but wont run under its own steam so to speak . All jets are clear.A friend suggests crankcase sealing as a posssible fault. Any suggestions ? Cheers D.L. |

Hello Touchard ST made about 60 R3MCs per year ending in Sept 1977. The serial number on your engine suggests it was built in the 2nd half of 1976. Hello seaman This worked for me. Take out the plug. Turn the engine over. Air should be compressed under the piston. This should release with a 'pop' as the piston rises past the transfer port. Is the c/case drain plug secure? If you are sure of your carb. settings then consider the old truth that the majority of carb. problems are caused by the ignition. Good luck and let's hear more. Dave B |

Hello Seaman, As suggested it my be Crankcase sealing but by what you describe.. Check and make sure you have the Piston in the correct way around. The Baffle (or Ramp) high side must face the inlet side of the cylinder. Not the Exhaust side. If wrong way around then it will not run, other than the way you have described. Hope this is of help.
