Gidday, may name is brett and i am just putting the finishing touches to my first marine engine,its an olds from maryborough, and the next to be rebuilt is the little p3 which i know nothing about but was told it was once in a small boat?It is such a little motor could this be correct.Brett QLD. |

Brett....Are you sure it is P3 ? It may be a R3 . If this is the case then it is a Stuart Turner ,mos likely to be the R3M model and they were indeed used in small boats .It is a 1 1/2 HP and was also used a auxuliary gen set and pumping unit .They are a very nice lttle engine and well worth restoring. |

I may have it wrong but the brass name plate says STUART and the second bress plate behind the magy says TYPE P3 and No 3338, the piston is about 58 mm roughly as it's in a few bits so i guess the cc to be about 160 once i know the stroke .Am i on the right track as i cant find any info to prove anything yet.Brett. |

Brett you may well be lucky enough to have a very early Stuart . The bore of the R3 is about 5o mm. What you have sound like something different .If you have a look at my avitar you will see a R3M Some more details would help. |

Hi Brett, Peter you are correct about the R3M it is a "Marine" version but the R3 was mainly for Gen Set's and Pumps.
The P3 was made totally for Marine use and usually used in Yatchs and were direct drive and used a folding propeller. A lot were also used in the Canal Boats in UK. The P4 (Rare) and then the popular P5 with the inbuilt gearbox followed.

Hi David ,yes well thanks but I have given away a few marine engines ,still got some S/T's. Needed more room and trying to down size but it is hard.....got a nice big Hot tube engine probably be the ''Last Hoorah''
I will have a look at that Yahoo site ,could be interesting.
I did have a S/T gen set,the engine was exactly the same as the R3 M that I have . The electrics were in a bad way ,also I could never source a new needle roller bearing for the big end so i did a mod and fitted a ball bearing . I ended giving the whole lot away to a young friend .
I hope Brett can restore his engine and I will be only too glad if he needs help |

Restoring the mechanicals will be ok finding the parts needed is always something different.I think the piston looks a lot like the early villiers so that could be a plus.The motor was retro fitted in a boat at some stage of its life and then placed on a saw sharpening jig in a sawmill untill it was made redundant,its a shame people have to pull things apart or it would all be there.Thanks for the offer Peter im sure ill stumble somewhere.Ill be checking out yahoo soon ,sounds like there could be some helpfull stuff to read aswell thankyou David.

Serial No 3338 is one allocatd to a P3 in the early 1920's .The P3 was not built for marine use.The first Stuart marine units according to available information was the "N"type ( I own 2).H/book available on Yahoo goup.
