I will start with itemising our engines. No1 p55m is on a trolley. No2 p55m is in our puttputt launch, the RubyToo. No3 p55mre is on a trolley. No2 is going great , and gets us around with much confidence, no3 is undergoing a complete rebuild, after several disasters we are spending alot of money but learning alot. No1 is now the problem it has always been hard to start, about a year ago after noticing water in the crankcases we put in new rings and top end gasket set. She proved to be watertight and had improved compression but still hard to start we ran her in the boat for about three months before purchasing No2 since then No1 has been out of the boat and on a trolley being started about every three to four weeks, despite being hard to start the engine is very quiet internally and likes to rev. But two weeks ago after starting her we discovered that water spitting from the exhaust coupling nut and on removal of the crankcase drain plugs water was again in the crankcase. I removed the exhaust outlet and replaced all the gaskets rejointed it and waited till this morning to start her again. After a prolonged starting process she started and ran smoothly, water again appeared out of the exhaust coupling joint and after letting her run for another five minutes shutting her down and removing the drains, about one and a half teaspoons of water and fuel and oil mixture came out. Does anyone have an idea what is the problem? i am leaning towards a failed head gasket, but as equal amount of water is coming out of both drains it would have to have failed internally where water is getting into both cylinders. Not too many places where water can get in as far as I can make out. Exhaust cooler can get eaten away, but think that would only let in water to exhaust. Maybe it could drain from cooler into cylinder then into sump leaving water in sump for difficult starting. Head gasket a possibility, but think you would have seen any poor area around the lands when rebuilding. A crack down between the bores is a possibility, but could be hard too see. Could be cured by sleeving. Dont envy you with that one. Best of luck. EM |
