I removed the starter motor from our P5m to rectify a sticking Bendix drive.I found it covered with the classic mixture of oil and water i.e mayonnaise.I fixed the starter and the engine runs well but I suspect a failed head gasket and a failed rear crankshaft oil seal.Worse.it could be a cracked block. We have only just bought the boat and do not know how well it was laid up last winter.Any help would be appreciated. |

James, It might have been possible for water to have got in through the drive outlet seal if there was water in the bilge of the boat. I should try changing the oil, although I have found that sometimes you have to do this more than once to get rid of any water present. It hardly takes any water to emulsify the oil even condensation can cause this. The Mini car engines were prone to this and BMC tried all sorts of breathers to stop the oil emulsifying! |

Giles Many thanks for your input. Our engine is a two stroke and its lubrication is only contained in the fuel.It has no sump with oil in it as the crankcase is part of the compression cycle.Bilge water has never reached the seals because that would have immersed the flywheel first and made an almighty mess as soon as we started the engine. The gearbox does contain oil but there is no emulsion in there, which is why I suspect a head gasket or a cracked block. The purpose of the rear crankshaft oil seal is to keep the compression in the crankcase so that it can be transferred to the cylinder.Would you agree with this or do you have any other ideas? Again many thanks James Gabriel |

I was wondering whether someone could sell me a set of Dynastart brackets for my P5 engine. The Dynastart is a SIBA Mk2. If not possible could someone provide me a pattern of the two top brackets so that I can make my own. Many Thanks |

James ,I would guess you have a failed head gasket. Where are you located ,are you subject to frost damage ,if so this could could have cracked the water jacket ? Corrosion around the stud holes and water passages where they mate up with the head /block sometimes allow passage of water .If you had a lot of water it would have been hard to start the engine . I think my idea of a new head gasket may be the answer.....lets have sme feed back . |

get a new oem feiltr and replace the leaking one. Sound like the one on bike now has a bad oil ring on it. Before placing new feiltr on make sure area on engine is clean then lube oil ring on the feiltr then hand tighten fiter on then at least haft turn by feiltr wrench. |
