Hi Guys
In my day job I manufacture racing engines (and the cars to go with them), but in the evening and weekends I sail a solo and rebuild boats.
My latest project is a 12 ft klinker built launch with a R3M two stroke motor.
The engine is very sound but there was water where oil shoud be, oil where petrol vapour should be and oil with water in it. An ugly coil has been fitted and the engine looked like one of my grandchildren had painted it.
At the weekend my son came round and by the end of the day we have it stripped to the last nut and bolt.
I read on your forum that the only source of parts has gone belly up due to the sad death of the owner. With my work contacts I can sort bearings, seals and machined parts. What I need help with is gaskets( although i can get them made if nec), brass nuts, magneto, engine paint, a manual would be helpfull and as much advice as possible.

A man of your experience should not have any problems Mick! From the sound of it your engine is complete [ all there]. There is not a great deal in the manual re these engines. It is all straight forward normal engine rebuilding.I would chuck out the coil ignition and use a Lucas RS1 Magneto .You most likely have one except it is running on coil and battery ignition. There again it might be a WICO. However try and stick with the Lucas .Your main problem .....and this is one I came up against is obtaining needle rollers for the big end bearing.I could not get any from the normal Bearing suppliers ,not that i need them now but you never know. All other bearings are easly sourced as standard imperial size from any bearing supplier. So if you can solve this problem with the needle bearings I am sure there a few of us who would welcome the news.
Gaskets ,again if you can make them do so ,I did .
If you have machining capacity you can accomadate any other requirements.
Nice to hear from someone in the US who likes these little engines. Many years ago I corresponded with some one in the US ,he had a Stuart Turner P55.It seemed to be set up differently to those we know in Australia or the UK ,ie coil ignition.
I am always on the look out for any R3m bits as I would like to construct another engine.

Thanks Peter
I will get the RS1 (or is it SR1) reconditioned and look into the roller bearings.
How many of these engines have been produced and what colour were they? Mine appears to have been red.
Any contacts for head gaskets and brass head nuts would be appreciated.
By the way I am based near Oundle Northants, not US
Thanks again

Ok Mick ....just sounded a bit "Mid Atlantic''.So my apoligies to you and the good folk of Oundle.
I am sorry I can not date your engine nor can i tell how many were made ,It's academic anyway!
The colour was "Stuart Turner Green'' which, as far as i am aware is ''Brunswick Green''
Brass head nuts were not the norm but many owners pretty the engine up by fitting brass dome head nuts.....you will have to have these made .Gaskets...I can only advise you will have to make them unless you can source a supply in the UK.

Hi David
Thats good news about the spares.
I reqire gaskets, bearings, seals and nuts etc and I suspect the SR1 needs reconditioning.
Please let me have all the details and costs and my cheque will be in the post.
Still not sure what colour to paint it. The engine is red inside. Does this mean it was originaly red? Also what type of paint do I use?
