can anybody tell me the best place to get spares for my r3m?I think fairways must have ceased trading as i can get no reply from their contact details.I think i may be needing a head gasket as my engine starts but won't run and is showing signs of moisture on the plug! |

Fairways has been liquidated and taken clients' money. I know - the liquidator says I won't be getting any of mine back. As the Liquidator's fees are covered, I suppose that is all that matters, eh? The assets (but not the order book, of course!?) have been sold off at a bargain basement 'forced sale' price; I have been told that the new owner(s) hope(s) to get the business going again, but know no more than that. Presumably there will be some advertising in due course, but I don't think I will be doing any business with Fairways again. |

I always thought Fairways a shonky business ever since they sent me an ivoice for something i never orderd .....all I wanted was information. I have a lot of spares mainly for P55 engines .All the parts are second hand and would be of use to someone who was desperate .I had an inquirey for a engine [P55} .I suggested that he take the lot,two engines several crankshafts heads and cylinders ,water pumps and other odds and sods. Looks like Stuart Turners will now become real vintage engines as there is no longer a source for parts .........fairwell Fairways , never did pay that invoice! |

We only had good service from Fairways . 2004 they restored our R3M which is now in Australia where its running very well . On my visit to the UK last year they promptly sent a new exhaust system to my folks which I collected and in march 2008 they posted new jet and cork fuel washers when requested to Adelaide S.A.. David Pickup was very helpful always and Linda his wife also ensured good ,friendly service in probably difficult times. Lets hope the new owner can also provide a good service to the many ST owners who want to continue enjoying these great little engines. |

Francis ....I hope the new owner can supply good service .I guess it is the old story of who the individual is that you are dealing with .As I said before I was not impressed with the invoice I recieved . My suggestion to Ivan is to make a head gasket .Take the head off and have a look at the condition of the sealing surfaces .He may find that they are corroded around the edges and will need to be "faced".A new gasket ,home made will fix it. What I am dreading is, if and when i ever need new needles for the big end bearing .I have found it impossible to get these .When the time comes I will modify the con rod to take a easly obtainable bearing .This will only apply to my R3M ...I am getting rid of all my P55 bits . |

I would second your comments about fairways Francis. All the dealings I have had with them, I found them to be a most efficient and helpful organisation. If spare parts companies in Australia worked the same as fairways used to we would be a lot better off. What P55 bits do you have to get rid of Peter, and at what price?? |

I am with you Chris,we are just about to pull down our newly acquired P55MRE and the thought of sourcing all the block, exhaust, and head gaskets makes me shudder. Also Peter can you please list what p55 bits you have. Chris, when we have finished the P55MRE it would suit and also look great in a small Tasmanian fishing boat. Matt and Ron. |

The performance at Fairways over the last year was the deciding factor in changing from my ST, which I loved, to a modern diesel. They were lovely people to talk to but absymal in getting anything done. Before David died I had an engine rebuilt, a P66, for which they charged me over £1800 up front and then took eighteen months before I got the engine returned, and that only after extreme pressure from me. To make matters worse they billed my credit card twice for the job and that took me three months to get a refund. I also sent them a separate magneto for overhaul at the same time, for which I paid at the time and never saw either the money or the magneto ever again. A number of things which were supposed to be put on the rebuild, and which were charged for, were not, for example new cylinder head nuts - the old ones were still on it when I got it back and I was told it "was put back together for the test bed like that and normally the new ones were put on afterwards", it must have "slipped through the net" and they would send me new ones - of course I never got them. What really was poor however was that when the engine went for rebuild I was told they would change the later model gearbox for an old tram handle one (they are different shapes) so that I would have a drop in replacement - they didn't and it was only after I eventually got the engine back they told me it could not be done as they didn't fit. So I still have an unused and rebuilt P66 in my garage if anyone is interested! I also have several other working P55/66's which I had acquired for fun and with the intention of overhauling myself and seeing out my boating days with which I shall also sell when I get round to it. Service wise, after David died and Lynda ran the company things seemed to go from bad to worse and I eventually gave up. Nice to talk to but usually a complete waste of time. I hope someone does take over and keep the marque going as certainly Fairways had all the patterns etc, I guess only time will tell. I did discover another company which have, or at least had, lots of spares, and which I got good service from although by then I had become so disillusioned that I had made the decision to move on, and they are marine enginers called Sailing based in Salcombe, website sailingmarine.co.uk. They are hard to contact via phone as they are out on jobs a lot but when you do get them they are very helpful and seem to have loads of spares. This info may help. I would have thought that Fairways would have been a pretty viable business for someone who had half an idea of what they were doing business wise as there are still probably thousands of these engines around the world which people want to keep running as when they are looked after they are really super little simple engines. |

Thanks for the Salcombe address Nick,i'm in Looe Cornwall so its very handy.Peter, can you tell me if the cylinder base gasket looks much different to the head gasket?I have some spare gaskets that are idetical to the head but are of a grey colour with what looks like reinforcing in, are these just a later type of head gasket?also can you give me a torque setting for the head nuts?Much obliged Ivan |

In answer to your first question Ivan .The cylinder head gasket is quite different in profile .Take the head off and you will easly be able to see if you have the right one. The gasket you describe ,with the wire reinforcing would be the head gasket. Torque settings .....I have never seen any specifications for this .I usually just nip the nuts up in sequence ie evenly ,then a final nip up . Dont be too zealous as you might pull the stud out.A final nip up when the engine is hot and a further check every couple of runs should be OK |

This is David’s Daughter, as many of you might know the company has now gone into liquidation and we have been told it has been brought by someone but have yet to find out who not through want or trying. My father was a great lover of the Stuart turner and over the years as spent a lot of time and money getting the business promoted and lot of effort through the hard times keeping it going, as his main focus was the customers and not letting them down, even on the day he died he was away with his family and delivering an engine. My mother made the decision that as it was his love and to keep the company going for the customers but with not as much knowledge as my father did, she did the best she could there are many happy customers out there, who respected her decision and understand how hard this has been for his family that the best thing for fairways was to sell it, which he had until the seller dropped out at the last minute. We were disappointed when it came to closing the business as it was my father’s love, but I hope many of you out there will understand after the tragic and sudden death of David the company struggled as it lost the best engineer there was and we had no other choice. As soon as we have news on where people can get parts we will let people know I hope the Stuart turner will live on, as I know my father would have been pleased. regards Rebecca |

Hello Rebecca. Any company will get mixed reviews (just look at the feedback on Amazon to see what I mean) but I think most of us were very happy with our dealings with your parents. Thanks to Fairways, we've breathed life back into old Stuarts and the help that both your parents gave us was invaluable. I hope your family is well and wish you all the best. Please tell your Mum that I finally got the ST4 running....and it's like having a brand new engine! Being a Stuart I don't expect it'll need a major overhaul for the next 20 years. I do hope someone out there will come to my rescue then. With best wishes to you and your family. Jon |

Hi Rebecca and Family. Sorry to hear about David's passing away. I only bought spares for my R3m once from you company, and that was about 2 years ago. I would like to thank your company for the sterling service I received at the time. Its a pity that Fairways Marine has stopped trading. vince |
