Hello
I need a gasket for the float chamber on my carb. it is an Amal.
all i can find gaskets for are motorcycle carbs!
i heard some people make their own? is it easy? does anyone have any templates?

Dave the normal way to make a gasket if you are starting from scratch is as follows ..............you need your gasket material ,some sharp scissors ,a set of wad punches and a small ball pein hammer.In some cases some Prussian Blue or bearing blue helps .
Lay the gasket mateial over the surface that you require the gasket for. Gasket materials have one side that has no printing on it ,use that side to take the imprint of the gasket that you want.You can smear a light coat of the Prussian Blue on the surface...not much just a very light smear.With experience you will find that you normaly dont need to do this.What you have to do is hold the gasket material firmly and tap around the edges of material .That is you are tapping and imprinting the out line of the gasket surface .You can also lightly tap any stud holes etc or use the suitable size wad punch. Remove the material and you should have the out line of the areas that you need to cut out ,this is where you need the sharp scissors .I have several pairs ,needle nosed etc .Also with experience you can tap out the gasket material for the stud holes .In most cases the edge that you are imprinting against is reasonably sharp or square edged and a good imprint is the result.
Practice with some paper before you use your expensive gasket material .
Gaskets of thicker mateial ,ie head gaskets require a couple of extra tools ,I use a small chisel with a radius to cut out the circular parts .
Do it this way and you will save $$$$ |

Folks,
Place a hardened steel sphere ( a ball from a suitable ball bearing ) over the holes on the gasket material and tap the ball with a hammer. This will cut the gasket out for you perfectly at these locations.
