Has anyone experienced a loud knocking noise from the drive chain?
I thought the noise was coming from the water pump so after changing the pump i was dismayed to hear the noise again,
After taking the water pump of again i decided to start her up with the pump off, i observed that the chain would snap when the impulse from the magneto kicked in i assume this is what is making the knocking noise.
The chain has a fair bit of slack in it, our no2 engine has just about the same, but the impulse system on its magneto seems to stop working at lower revs.
My questions are, is the loose chain to blame or is it the impulse mechanism on the magneto.
Any help would be great,
Matt and Ron.

Matt,

Is it hitting the chain guard?

John, it does not hit the housing, but the chain itself gets like a whip like effect causing a ripple in the chain.
I am of the opinion that the impulse mechanism of the magneto at low revs combined with a stretched and worn chain make this noise, i will try different magnetos and see if it makes a difference. Everything else looks fine, no missing teeth on gears, no pieces of metal floating around where they should not be.
The sound is annoying but now that i know it is not terminal i am a bit more relaxed about putting to sea, but for peace of mind i would like to solve this problem.
Matt.

Matt,

You could have a stuck link or two. On the other hand, it could be a loose chain that is exhibiting the Chain Belt Problem.

Go to YouTube.com and type in the following string: Archibald Chain Belt

Watch that video and tell me if this is what you see on your P55.

You might just be right, the throw on the chain happens after it has left the sprocket with the chain going in a anti clockwise direction the throw bulges away from the sprocket and actually pulses with the magneto, i think it may be time to replace the chain, thanks very much for your help John.
Matt.
