hi everyone, just bought a boat with a 1963 P5. The exhaust pipe is badly dented, so I need to replace it. What diameter is the pipe and what metal should it be? And I am a little unclear about the way that the throttle lever works... I can see that the plunger by the lever is set to a specific point when in neutral, and in ahead/astern it's released to travel more, but should the peg on it engage with the slotted "cam" on the outside, attached to the lever. Sorry if this all sounds a bit vague, I'm hoping you experienced people will know what I'm on about! It's just that I can't see how the throttle works... And am worried therefore that it doesn't. While I'm here, I have a Wico series A that isn't sparking. It's best to earth with a wire from one of the two brass sprung knobs, I suppose, and the gap is 0.012 or 0.016" I think... Argh! Thanks for any assistance, Jasp |

Jasp...Stuart Turner say to use Brass inch and a half tube with a exhaust silencer of 18''x 5''. The throttle and gear lever are conected as you know.Yes the peg does engage with the cam .The return to a neutral position is by way of a spring. If you need further info on this I can send an image to help you...let me know. If you are using a switch to shut down your engine run a insulated wire from one of the knurled screwed caps on the WICO magneto through a switch and then to an earth usually on the engine body. The breaker points are set to .012 thou. Give me a call if you want further help .....just on my way out for dinner ! |

Hi Peter, thanks for that... So My peg is nowhere near my cam at the moment... Hmmm, will dismantle. Would really appreciate an image of what it should look like. I have two stop buttons on my Series A which are very simple switches, and the knurled brass sprung caps... In order to get a good earth I guess I should run an insulated wire from one of them to the engine, yes? Otherwise no spark...? JB |

Matt Balkwell here Peter, finally we have got our p55 running fine , but like jasper our peg does not engage the cam when put into gear, if you could send me the same info that you have mentioned to jasper that would be great. Finally, we cannot get our solex 26mhd to idle at a decent slow speed, it continues to loose revs and has to be given a hurry up, any help would be great. Matt |

My message box at work was to full, this has been fixed and some of your pix have come through, thanks very much for them. Our problem with the carby is that once we have what we think is a good idle, the motor stays there for about one minute and then gradually dies off until we give it some more revs, is there any way to maintain a slow idle with the solex 26mhd? |
