Bob Legnon has the mixer pictured below, he hasn't tried to run it yet. I don't see how it will work as is, the ball on the stem is free floating, it rest on a seat at the fuel inlet. When the air lifts the poppet valve there's nothing to lift the ball to allow fuel in. Any ideas?

I had similar on an 1897 Union boat engine, except that the poppet valve lifted a needle valve above and dribbled in a little petrol from on top, which mixed with the air being drawn in. Worked fine - max rpm was 440. Assume the little ball seals just before the poppet seats. There was a regular steel suction inlet valve up in the head - no cam just suction. The assembly was located low in the bilge and fuel tank was well above the engine. |

Well, somehow that ball HAS to get lifted up to allow the fuel to enter and atomize. The mass of the valve is much more than the small ball. So there may be a pulse of negative pressure that opens the valve and also affects the ball. But once the poppet valve opens, there's no more negative pressure. Or maybe there is a missing part that connects the spindle of the ball and the poppet valve - some kind of friction fitting? It will be interesting to see if it works . Are you guys warm enough down there to actually start an old engine? miro |

I'm sure Bob will have it on the table when we stop by Miro, maybe he can try it before. Greg had a "steam up" today, plenty of steam engines, short sleeve weather, a little warm for the gumbo, but it was delicious. |

I sure would like to get there sooner, but I've got an exam ( HTML Coding for Web Site Design) to get done first. Some smart ass somewhere said you're never too old to learn - but - oh boy, sure was a bit of a challenge for me. Most of the other student could be my grandchildren ( thank goodness they weren't). Checking the weather in Dans'ville sure makes it tempting. And yes - we WILL take a good look at Bob's carb. miro |
