The Wheeler & Schebler booklet published about 1906 states “ Schebler Carburetors are made of brass, Aluminum will be furnished on special orders”. I am curious as to the reason why the Company offered an aluminum version and whether this was a common option. I have one carburetor with an aluminum bowl, image attached. Other than the bowl, the components are bronze and identical except the float valve seat is a brass insert. The aluminum version weighs about 1 ¼ lbs less, seems like a small weight saving if that was the only reason. Barry

I would assume it would be a nice option for an airplane or dirigible. otherwise, some racer may have wanted to save weight. |

I've seen an aluminum bowl cover, even less weight savings. Marine engines used brass for corrosion resistance, aluminum would have been a problem.} |

Aviation carburetors were indeed cast in aluminum to save weight. In the case of Zenith, only the jets and other fittings were made of brass and the gasoline bowl cover was cast bronze. I am looking for a Zenith L-8 with a 2-1/8" diameter opening at the joint with the manifold. Please let me know if you know of one that is available. |
